Hawaii native and ex-Washington Huskee linebacker Psalm Wooching lends his rugby abilities to the San Diego Legion’s 2019 season as a loose forward. After declining the advances of NFL scouts ahead of the 2017 draft, Wooching publicly declared his desire to pursue a career in rugby, a sport he first encountered in the temperate climate of the Big Island. Since then, Wooching’s skill as a ball carrier and tackler has caused consideration by clubs in France (Pau), the U.K. (Harlequins F.C.), Hong Kong (H.K. Scottish), and Italy (Viadana 1970) while practicing with the Seattle Saracens in the United States. In 2017, Wooching first pulled on an American jersey with the Selects, a developmental squad for the USA Eagles, in a tough match against Samoa in the Americas Pacific Challenge. He would again be chosen for the Selects in 2018, while making his debut for the USA Eagles that same year as Eagle no. 519. Channeling his experience as a collegiate defensive standout, Wooching does not shy away from rugby’s physicality and exhibits a style of play he claims is inspired by the likes of Manu and Alesana Tuilagi.
