SALT LAKE CITY (April 13, 2018) – Major League Rugby (MLR) today announced an exclusive distribution agreement between Cox and San Diego Legion for MLR’s inaugural season, launching April 2018. Eight matches—five live and three rebroadcasts—will be televised on Cox’s YurView network, available on Channel 4 to Cox and Spectrum cable customers in San Diego.
All five live matches will also be available to stream on YurView’s streaming service and will have at least one replay the week following the live telecast. Additionally, YurView will replay, on tape delay, three Legion matches, which will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network as the MLR Game of the Week.
The deal completes MLR’s comprehensive distribution package, providing American rugby fans access to all matches. MLR is building sustainable fanbases in rugby communities through coverage of every regular and postseason match. The local rights package is an important step in completing this objective as it ensures every game will be broadcast to television, streamed live online and available to all devices.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Cox,” said Matt Hawkins, San Diego Legion General Manager. “Sharing rugby with more people is a core focus of San Diego Legion. Our partnership with Cox makes this possible, while also providing the highest quality experience for everyone, especially the local rugby community. I’m thrilled all eight inaugural season games will soon air on YurView Channel 4 as we compete for the first MLR championship, taking place on July 7 here in San Diego.”
“Cox has a long history of producing and televising local professional, collegiate and high school sports in San Diego,” said Sam Attisha, Senior Vice President and Region Manager for Cox Communications in California. “Our YurView crew creates quality, award-winning programming, and we’re excited to help bring San Diego’s new professional sports team to the region.”
Major League Rugby will launch with seven teams in 2018 including Austin, Houston, Glendale (Colorado), New Orleans, San Diego, Seattle and Salt Lake City (Utah). Additionally, New York has joined as an associate member for 2018 commencing regular season play in 2019. Each market has a long history of support for the game of rugby. The members have strong local and civic-minded ownership groups with deep ties to their communities and have established grassroots programs, venues in place or in development, and a player pool featuring the best players in North America, reinforced by up to five international signings in the 15-player, Rugby Union format.
